Hans Christian 38

A Proven Blue Water Cruiser Ready for Adventure

This stunning 1985 Hans Christian 38 MK II Cutter represents the pinnacle of bluewater cruising design and build quality. With a documented history of solo passages and thousands of miles under her keel, Talmid has proven herself capable in any conditions. Her classic Hans Christian lines, elegant canoe stern, and formidable construction make her instantly recognizable—and built to exceed expectations in heavy weather.

What truly sets her apart is her ability to carry full sail when competitors are reefing, combined with the timeless elegance of fine teak woodwork throughout. She's a boat that turns heads in any anchorage while delivering the performance and seaworthiness serious cruisers demand.

The Talmid Experience: Deck to Cabin

On Deck: Your first impression reveals the meticulous care evident in her teak decks.  The teak on the decks and cockpit were entirely replaced in 2014.  Moving forward, the massive bowsprit dominates the foredeck—a signature element of her powerful cutter rig. The cockpit showcases the distinctive Hans Christian profile: exceptionally wide, comfortably seated for hours underway, protected by a custom spray hood that keeps you dry in the roughest conditions. The high combing prevents water from ever reaching the helmsman.

Below Decks: Step into a vessel designed for extended cruising. To port, the fully equipped galley features a gimbaled 3-burner propane stove with oven, top-loading refrigerator/freezer, countertops, and double stainless sink—everything needed to prepare meals in any sea state. To starboard, the first cabin offers a comfortable quarter berth arrangement for guests.

The main saloon invites relaxation with comfortable seating around a substantial table on the port side and a full settee to starboard. The reverse-cycle A/C unit maintains comfort in both scorching summer heat and crisp winter conditions.

Forward: The owner's stateroom features an portside offset island queen berth positioned for comfort and stability underway, with generous storage on the side side. The fully equipped head sits well forward with a separate shower stall and distinct sink area. Just forward of the head lies convenient access to the chain locker.

Propulsion & Systems Ready for the Next Passage

Talmid's heart is a Beta Marine 35 w/ PRM 2.94:1 transmission. new shaft with PSS dripless seals and Sigmadrive coupling. The 35-horsepower diesel provides excellent fuel economy while the direct-drive, 3-blade Max propeller and new shaft with dripless coupling ensure silent, efficient motoring. The engine sits easily accessible beneath the companionway for simple maintenance.

Tankage & Power: Two freshwater tanks provide 170 gallons of capacity, while dual fuel tanks hold 145 gallons of diesel—both thoroughly inspected during the recent engine installation. An 6-gallon hot water tank integrates with both shore power and the engine heating loop. The holding tank (18 gallons) supports extended offshore cruising.

Electrical Systems: Shore power connection (30 amps), Available solar panels, inverter, and ProNautic charger provide flexibility whether you're dockside or at anchor.
